Question 8
Observation
The Chief Examiner reported that attempt by many candidates’ was fair in part(a) of this question. While part(b) was avoided by many candidates’ In part (a) (i) they were expected to draw a Venn diagram to illustrate the information as shown
In part(a) (ii) using the diagram in part (a) (i), the number of students, x = 6 + 3 + 5 + 4 + 7 + 2 + 5 + 4 = 36. In part (b), they were expected to draw a diagram to illustrate the information as shown:
from the diagram, tan〖〖58〗^° 〗 = h/x gives h = x tan〖〖58〗^° 〗 (1) and also tan〖〖36〗^° 〗 = h/(90 + x) gives h = (90 + x) tan〖〖36〗^° 〗 (2). Solving both equation simultaneously, we observe that x = 74.8254m and h = 119.743m. So that the height of the pole, h = 120m correct to three significant figures.
