With reference to Symphony in E minor (from the new world) by Anton Dvorak:

(a) for what medium was the music originally written?

(d) explain any four of the following terms and signs as used in the excerpt:

OBSERVATIONS

Candidates were expected to study the set-piece and respond according to the questions. However, most of the candidates performed poorly in this question and the most apparent cause of the poor performance was non-availability of the prescribed set-pieces. Candidates should have responded to the question in the following ways:

(a) Orchestra

(c) Dotted notes, Repetition, Melodic variation, Homophonic texture, Terraced dynamics, Pedal points, Dynamics, Augmentation, Syncopation, Doubling in parallel 3rds and Aesthetic decoration (Coda)

(ii) pedal: depress the sustaining pedal; sustain notes.
(iii) right hand; use right hand.
(iv) crescendo; becoming gradually louder.
(v) sf – sforzando; with force, with stress, with emphasis.
(vi) tremolo, shaking, quick and continuous alteration between two notes.
(vii) fortissimo; very loud.
