Observation

This question was popular among the candidates and most of these candidates performed above average and this resulted in them scoring high in the question.

  1. (i) Rondo form: This form has a principal theme (sometimes called the “refrain”) alternates with one or more contrasting themes, generally called “episodes”, but also occasionally referred to as  “digressions” or “couplets”. Possible patterns in the classical period include: ABACA, or ABACABA or ABACADA. The numbers of themes can vary from piece to piece, and the recurring element is sometimes embellished and/or shortened in order to provide for variation. The rondo can be used either as an independent piece or as one movement of symphony, string quartet, string quintet, sonata, or concerto. It is an instrumental form.

(ii) Ternary form: is a three-part musical form where the main theme/core statement/first section (A) is repeated after the contrast/second section (B) ends. It is usually schematised as A-B-A. It can either be simple or compound.
It is sometimes called song form.
It consists of a 1st section (more or less complete and self-contained) a 2nd section, contrasting as to musical material and key/normally in the Dominant or the Tonic minor or Relative major) and then the 1st one repeated (ABA)
