Question 4
Chords
Observation
Candidates’ performance in this question was below average. The question required candidates to listen to a chord progression consisting of 8 chords in the key of C major and then identify the chord used in the progression. Despite the fact that question was popular among the candidates, most of the candidates that attempted it could not recognise first and second inversion of chords from the root position, thereby losing greater parts of the mark allotted to the question. Candidates were expected to respond thus:
Or
Tonic root position, Dominant second inversion, Tonic first inversion, Subdominant root position, Tonic second inversion, Dominant seventh root position, Dominant seventh root position, Tonic root position.
