Question 4
Chords
The question required candidates to listen to a chord progression consisting of 8 chords in the key of A flat major and then identify the chord used in the progression.
Observation
Candidates’ performance in this question was below average. Despite the question was popular among the candidates, some of the candidates that attempted could not recognise first and second inversion of chords from the root position, thereby losing greater parts of the mark allotted to the question. Candidates were expected to respond thus:
(i) I (Tonic root position) (v) IIb (Supertonic first inversion)
(ii) I (Tonic root position) (vi) IIIb/IIIb7 (Mediant first inversion/ Mediant seventh first inversion)
(iii) V7 (Dominant seventh root position) (vii) V7 (Dominant seventh root position)
(iv)VI (Submediant root position) (viii) I (Tonic root position)
