Observation
Preparation
The candidate is responsible for preparing the working surface before the day of the examination. The candidate is also responsible for the materials required in carrying out the examination to specifications.
Working surface
A straw board/Plywood (5mm thick) measuring 50cm x 75cm to be coated with the recommended water thinned (emulsion) paint before the day of the examination.
Examination
(i) The examination consists of the safety sign and the word.
(ii)Reproduce the design and lettering, which should be in Gothic condense in the given dimension.
(iii)Cut the design and lettering to stencils and dab with specified colours.
(iv)The dimension and colour indications are to guide the candidates and should not be replicated on the final work.
DIAGRAM HERE
Candidates who attempted question 1, did not adhere to instruction, which needed them to stencil and dab the design on the surface. While, “BASIC SHAPES” was to be signwritten under the design but rather, the candidates stencilled and dabbed “BASIC SHAPES”. By so doing they missed a lot of marks.
In question 2, the candidates adhered to instruction, despite the fact that their output was defective in area of centrality of the design. The candidates performed better in question 2 than in question 1.
They were expected to provide the following answers to alternative 1 and 2:
1. INTERPRETATION OF TASK
(a) Surface specification (Straw board/Plywood).
(b) Setting out of the design.
2. EXECUTION OF TASK
(a) Surface preparation
(i) Application of specified paint.
(ii) Defect – free finished surface.
(b) Placement/Layout of Design
(i) Interpretation of design.
(ii) Placement of design.
(c) Adherence to General Specification
(i) Design dimension.
(ii) Lettering dimension.
(d) Technical Proficiency
(i) Construction of lettering.
(ii) Painting of lettering.
(iii) Painting of design.
3. COLOUR
- Use of colour specification on
- Background.
- Design.
- Lettering.
- Proficiency in colour application.
4. FINISHING
- Completion of the task within the specified time.
- Evidence of individual creativity.
