(a) Describe emulsion paint.
(b) List any three reasons for painting a house.
(c) (i) Describe runs as a paint defect.
(ii) Outline two causes of paint runs.
(iii) State the remedy for paint runs.
Observation
This question was very clear and precise. Some candidates’ answered question 1 (a) correctly while, others out of point. In 1(b) the candidates’ failed to emphasize the use of terms like: identification; decoration; sanitation and economic value. Candidates were expected to provide the following answers to the question:
(a) - emulsion is a stable combination of two liquids which normally will not mix together except with the aid of an emulsifying agent.
- It is a water based paint which dries by evaporation/coalescence when applied on to a surface.
- It is a water based paint which can be applied on a suitable surface.
(b) - Decoration
- Preservation
- Sanitation
- Economic value/value enhancement
- Identification
(c)
(i) it is the flowing or dripping of paint from upper vertical surface to the
lower part forming a tear- like or wavy appearance.
- It is a stream of flowing paint on a vertical surface.
(ii)
- Application/painting of excessively thick coat.
- Application/painting of excessive diluted/ too thinned paint.
- Unevenly distribution of paint on a surface.
- Accumulation of excess paint on irregular surfaces
.
(iii)
- Allow paint film to dry
- Abrade the paint film
- Remove/clean the surface with appropriate tool
- Re-apply paint skilfully
- Mix paints to a suitable consistency/thickness
