. CANDIDATES WEAKNESSES AND SUGGESTED REMEDIES
Candidates performance was affected by the following weaknesses
- Poor understanding of acceleration of free falling objects under gravity
- Inability to interpret/make deductions from graph
- Vague knowledge of concept of photo emission and other principles,
required for explanations, and calculations
- Unable to state two phenomena that can be explained using kinetic theory
of gases
- Poor computational skills
- Inability to state pressure law
- Inability to cite examples to illustrate effects of surface tension
- Poor understanding of basic principles of physics which resulted into wrong interpretation of real life issues.
- Poor language expression
- Failure to convert units appropriately e.g. g to kg
- Inability to differentiate between concentration and concentration gradient
as one of the factors that affect the rate of diffusion.
The following remedies were suggested to overcome the weaknesses:
- Adequate preparation and concerted effort by the candidates put into grasping and understanding of basic principles of physics and how to apply them;
- Teachers to use instructional materials to make the subject real;
- Teachers to endeavour to cover the syllabus in good time;
- Teachers to prepare several mock questions for the candidates to practice;
- Qualified and experienced physics teachers should be engaged to teach the subject.
