Question 8
- (i) State the similarity and the difference between scalars and vectors.

(ii) Classify the following quantities in tabular form, as either scalar or vector: density, energy, displacement, distance, force and momentum.
- An electron and a proton are 5.3 x 10-11 m apart in a hydrogen atom. Calculate the gravitational force of attraction between the particles. (Melectron = 9.1 x 10-31 kg; Mproton = 1.67 x 10-27 kg; G == 6.67 x 10-11 Nm2kg-2)

- A car of mass 1200.0 kg moves with a speed of 12.5 ms-1 round a curve of radius 30.0 m on a level road.

- Draw and label a diagram showing forces acting on a wheel of the car.

- Calculate the coefficient of friction between the wheel and the road

Observation
Part (a) (i) Many candidates answered this question. Majority of the candidates were able  answer the question correctly to obtain the maximum score.
  (ii) Candidates performance was above average.
    Performance was above average.
Part (b)   Many candidates attempted this question but performed fairly. Most candidates
could not state the proper formula for correct substitution. Performance was far.

Part (c) Candidates performance was below average.
The expected answer is:
8. (a) (i) Similarity

    Both have  magnitude

    Difference

    Vectors have direction while scalars do not
