CANDIDATES’ WEAKNESSES

The following were some of the noticeable weaknesses in the candidates’ scripts:

  1. Inadequate knowledge of art history

Candidates’ understanding in art history remained clearly inadequate, especially on West African and Western art.
(2)        Irrational presentation of points
Candidates as usual could not organize their points logically. Responses were mostly confusing and inconsistent.
(3)        Inappropriate use of answer booklet
The use of answer booklet by candidates was poor. Some candidates wrote their responses to the same question on different pages without any indication of such. Some others also answered two or more questions on the same page. Candidates were expected to answer a new question on a fresh page in the answer booklet.

SUGGESTED REMEDIES

The following were some of the actions necessary in solving the identified weaknesses:
(1)        Improved Knowledge of art history
Competence in art is complete only when practical skill is harmonized with the knowledge of art history. This is because of the need for visual artists to articulate the content and context (background) of their art forms. In view of this, it is necessary for candidates to make thorough efforts on grasping the theory (including the history) of art. The WASSCE syllabus for Visual art stipulates that candidates will be assessed, not only in the practical areas, but also in the theoretical aspects such as General knowledge in Art and the history of West African Art, Western and Pre-historic art. Consequently, it is only appropriate for teachers and students to sufficiently combine the knowledge of these areas with the practical components. Candidates should read books on art as much as they practice drawing and painting.
(2)        Improved understanding of English Language
Candidates should make effort to improve their understanding and use of the English Language. This will enable them to comprehend the requirements of questions and it will also enable intelligent presentation of points. They can approach this by devoting quality time to reading books, novels, journals, etc.
            (3)        Appropriate orientation on examination ethics

Candidates should make efforts to acquire the proper orientation on examination ethics. This is especially necessary in the use of answer booklets. The standard in WASSCE and other public examinations is for candidates to start answering a new question on a fresh page rather than muddling two or three answers on a page.
