Question 1
(1) Make the test piece shown on page 3, using the timber which has been planed to the following sizes (all dimensions are in milimetres):
one piece - 210 x 100 x 20 hardwood;
two pieces - 140 x 100 x 20 hardwood;
one piece - 175 x 150 x 6 plywood;
one piece - 205 x 50 x 6 plywood;
two 6 x 12 countersunk screw.
(2) You may use any of the ordinary hand tools but the use of glue, glass-paper, files, rasps and scrapers is not allowed.
(3) Any dimensions which is omitted from the drawing is left to your own discretion.
(4) If you make any mistakes, work as near to the drawing as possible. Additional materials will not be supplied.
(5)Print your name and index number clearly on each piece of wood and assemble your work before handing it to the Supervisor.
Observation
This was the only question the candidates were required to answer. It is a practical one which entails the construction of a photo stand using different joints for its production.
The activities involved in this project are:
(a) Lapped dovetail joint: Many of the students were unable to construct the joint correctly. In most situations the laps were not provided. The chiselling of the shoulders were poorly done. This may be as a result of using dull chisels.
(b) Partitioning: This operation requires cutting of grooves on the bottom and side parts of the project. Many left out the groove required on the bottom piece.
(c) Fixing the back: This activity requires cutting notches at the back of the project. Many candidates attempted this activity, however the chiselling was poor. This reflects that the chisels used were not sharp enough.
(d) Rounding the top end of the side pieces: Majority of the candidates attempted this part of the question. A few could not round the ends correctly. This may be due to their inability to read the questions correctly.
