Question 4

(a) Name any three methods of transmitting motion from one shaft to another.

(b) Give one example of each method named in 4(a) above.

(c) (i) With the aid of a sketch, show one of the methods named in 4(a) above.

    (ii) Label two parts of the sketch.

    (iii) State one defect which could affect efficiency of the method.

    (iv) Explain how the defect in (c)(iii) above can be rectified.

OBSERVATION

Most of the candidates who attempted this question gave wrong answers.  The correct answers for the various parts of the questions are:

(a)       gear drive;
            chain drive;
            belt drive.       
           splines;
          clutch and
           universal joints.

(b)       (i)        Gears in gear box, rear axle, crankshaft
            (ii)       chain in crankshaft and camshaft
            (iii)      belt in water pump and alternator or crankshaft and camshaft.
            (iv)      splines in propeller shaft, half shaft and gear box main  shaft.
            (v)       clutch in transmission system
            (vi)      universal joints as on propeller shaft.

(c)        Any one of the following sketches is the required sketch for part [C(i) and C(ii)]

The correct defects and remedies for  part [C(iii) and C(iv)] are

* Warn broken gear teeth

* Replace the gears

* Stretched chain, broken teeth

* Adjust chain, renew chain

* Stretched belt, sheared teeth defective

* Renew worn/sheared splined shaft

* Worn or oily plate, broken 
   springs

* Replace the plate.  Replace the
