(a) State three functional requirements of a roof.
(b) List three materials used for roof covering.
(c) (i)  State two types of floor.

OBSERVATION

Most candidates were able to:
- state the functional requirements of a roof;
- list the materials used for roof covering.
However, some candidates were unable to:
- state types of floor;
- list examples of each floor.

The expected response to question 4 is as given below:
(a) Three functional requirements of a roof are:

    1. stability;
    2. strength;
    3. weather resistance or exclusion of wind, sun or rain;
    4. durability;
    5. fire resistance;
    6. thermal insulation;
    7. sound insulation;
    8. provide enclosure for service; facilities
    9. aesthetics.

(b) Materials used for roof covering are:

-           thatch;
      -     galvanised corrugated iron sheets;
      -     corrugated asbestos cement sheet;
      -     corrugated aluminium sheet;
      -     files (concrete or clay);
      -     reinforced concrete;
      -     timber shingles;
      -     slates;
      -     bituminous felt/roofing felt;
      -     bamboo;
      -     earth decking.

(c)        (i)         Types of floor are:
                                                                                                        Based on material
                                    (i)         Solid floor/hollow floor          (iv)  Hollow timber floor;
                                    (ii)        Ground floor;                  OR  (v)    Reinforced concrete floor;
                                    (iii)       Suspended floor.                     (vi)   Hollow pot floor.

                        (ii)        Examples of each of the floor stated in c(i) are:

                                    (i)         solid floor:     (1)  reinforced concrete;
                                                                      (2)   mass concrete; ground.

                                    (ii)        ground floor: (1)   mass concrete;
                                                                      (2)   suspended timber ground floor.

                                    (iii)       suspended floor:   (1)  reinforced concrete;
                                                                             (2)  wooden;
                                                                             (3)  hollow block/concrete floor.
