  1. (a)                    Explain the following terms used in Clothing and Textiles.

    1. crocheting;
    2. glazing;
    3. mercerization;
    4. retting;

    (b)        State three reasons why cotton fabric is suitable for use   
                 in the tropics.
    (c)        List four uses of cotton in the hospital.

OBSERVATION

None of the candidates attempted question 4 at all and the question is on textiles which is a major area of the syllabus.

The required answers to the questions are as follows:

  • Explanation of the following terms

 

  • Crocheting

Is the process of interlocking thread/yarns into loops using special hooks or crochet pins.

  • Glazing

Is a finishing treatment given to cotton fabrics which produces a stiff hand and a lustrous surface.

                (iii)   Mercerization

Is a finishing process whereby cotton yarn/fabric is passed through
strong solution of caustic soda to make it lustrous, smooth, strong and absorbent.

               (iv)    Retting

It is the rotting away of the woody covering of the flax stems in the manufacture of linen fabrics.

              (v)      Printing

                        It is the application of pattern, or colour to the surface of a fabric.

  • Reasons why cotton fabric is suitable for use in the tropics
