Most candidates were able to answer the (a) part of the question but many wrote off point in the (b) part. To score good marks in this question, candidates were expected to highlight the following points in the (b) part.

(i) The movement sometimes worsens the unemployment situation in the urban areas, because it takes some time for the youths who have moved to the urban centres to get employed.
(ii) As population explosion is experienced in the cities, the demand for social services such as schools, hospitals, electricity, transport and water supply may be over-stretched.
(iii) It may lead to over-concentration of development in urban centres leading to a continued neglect of rural areas.
(iv) Rural – urban drift may lead to a drastic reduction in food production since it is the youth who have moved out that are actively involved in agriculture in the rural areas.
(v) There will be increase in government expenditure.
(vi) If the labour force is inactive, this may lead to low national income and standard of living and it could generate inflation.
(vii) Reduction in supply of raw materials for industries
