It was reported that majority of the candidates performed well in this question.  They were able to apply the laws of indices correctly and obtained the quadratic equation in 2x as 4(2x)2 – 9(2x) + 2 = 0.  Solving this quadratic equation gave   2x = 2 or ¼. Expressing 2x, 2 and  in index form and comparing co-efficients gave, x = 1 or -2
