Question 9

  1. Express  in partial fractions.
  2. If  y  =  , determine the value of x for which  = y.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________
Observation

This question was reportedly attempted by majority of the candidates and they performed well in it, they were able to express    + .  Multiplying both sides by the LCM and comparing coefficients gave P = 3, R = 0 and Q = 1. Thus the partial fractions are:   =  + .

In part (b), since y = (x + 1,  = 1/2(x + 1 .  But   i.e.   =     2(x + 1) = 1.  Hence x = -1/2
