Observation

Most candidates defined pollution as bad odour coming from the body.
Circumstances that cause pollution was well treated.

The required answers to the questions are as follows:

(a) Meaning of pollution

Pollution is a process or an act by which harmful substances called pollutants are released into the environment making it unsafe to live in.

Key words – (1)        harmful
                       (2)       making the environment unsafe.
                       
 (b) Circumstances that bring about pollution

    • Dumping of refuse at unauthorized places, which rot and give offensive smell.
    • Urinating at unauthorized places which also gives offensive smell.
    • Defecating into rivers making the water unsafe for use
    • Washing and bathing into streams, ponds, river etc
    • Release of chemical waste by manufacturers into streams, lakes, river etc.
    • Using dirty containers to fetch water from wells, streams etc.
    • Taking animals to drink from streams, ponds, rivers.
    • Burning of items which release smoke into the air.
    • Leaving waste to fly about in the environment
    • Smoke emitting from vehicles and generators
    • Excessive noise from radio, people etc and blowing of whistles which produce noise pollution.

(c) Consequences of water pollution

    • Water becomes unsafe to all living things
    • People become exposed to water-borne diseases e.g. cholera, dysentery, bilharzias, when they use the contaminated water.
    • Living things in the water are destroyed/killed – example, fish
    • Environment becomes unsafe for people to live in
    • There are epidemic which may lead to death
    • Economy will be affected negatively.
