Question 2

(a) State one difference between countersinking and counterboring.
(b) State one use each of the following joints:

    1. screwed joints;
    2. riveted joint;
    3. soft soldered joint;
    4. welded joint.

(c)        (i)         Sketch a soldering iron.
            (ii)        Label any two parts of the sketch in (c)(i).

OBSERVATION

Most of the candidates could not differentiate between countersinking and counterboring.  They could not also state the use of the above mentioned joints in part (b) of the question.  The required response from them for Part (a)  of the question is:
Countersinking is the opening out of the end of a hole so conically shaped so as to take a countersunk head rivet or screw.  While counterboring consists opening out the end of a drilled hole so as to take the cylindrical lead of a cheese-headed screw.
