Annealing a high carbon steel involves heating the metal above the upper critical range and cooling the steel slowly in the furnace or in sand. The slow cooling enables the steel to retain its original qualities thus giving the steel a coarse structure.
(b) This part of the question was another difficult area. The required response is: The
amount of carbon in metals determines the degree of hardness of the metal.
