In this question candidates were required to

  1. State use each of the following sewing machine attachments:
    1. the zipper foot;
    2. the binder;
    3. hemmer foot.
  2. Mention parts of the sewing machine that set it in motion.
  3. Describe how to thread the sewing machine.
  4. Give examples of measuring tools used in the dressmaker’s shop.

 

OBSERVATION:

Many candidates were unable to answer questions 1a, b, c and d correctly and performed very poorly.  The expected answers are: the zipper foot is used to stitch fastener very close or near to the teeth of a zipper fastener, it is used for attaching zipper, for making corded seam. The binder is used for attaching bias binding to straight or curved edges automatically. Hemmer foot is used to make very narrow hems on fine fabrics e.g. on edges of frills. The expected answers for parts of sewing machine that sets it in motion are: handle, take up lever, tension disc, needle thread tension, balance wheel, pedal. Description on how to thread the sewing machine include: turn the balance wheel so that the needle is set at the highest point, place the reel of thread in position on the spool pin, put the thread through the thread guide, draw the thread in between the tension disc and through the wire spring, put the thread through the thread tale up lever, bring thread down and pass it through the thread guide and through the eye of the needle, insert bobbin and bobbin case into its compartment bringing the bobbin thread through the throat plate whilst holding the spool thread to form a loop, pull the bobbin thread and place threads under the presser foot towards the back pr sides of the sewing machine. The expected answers for examples of measuring tools used in a dressmaker’s shop are: tape measure, meter rule, protractor, sewing gauge
