    The diagrams below illustrate preparation of oral rehydration solution. Study it and answer questions 3(a) to 3(e).

     

    (a) Name the disease condition that could be managed with the administration of the solution. [1 mark]
    (b) Mention three materials needed for the preparation of the solution.                                   [3 marks]
    (c) Explain briefly how the solution could be prepared.                                                         [4 marks]
    (d) State the usefulness of the solution to humans.                                                                 [1 mark]
    (e) How long can the solution last?                                                                                       [1 mark]

     

Observation

 

 Majority of the candidates that attempted this question performed well in it. Many however could not   explain    how oral rehydration solution is prepared.\


The expected answers are:

 

(a)     Disease condition that could be managed with the administration of the solution
Dysentery/ Diarrhoea                                                                                            

(b)   Materials needed for the preparation of the solution

  • Salt
  • Sugar
  • Water                                                                                                           

 

 

(c)   Preparation of the solution

  • One litre of water is poured in a clean bowl
  • Add ten teaspoonful of granulated sugar/five cubes of sugar
  • Add one teaspoon of salt
  • Each spoon should be levelled to avoid excess sugar/salt
  • Mix the content with a spoon                                                              

(d)     Usefulness of the solution

  • It prevents dehydration/rehydrates the body
  • It replenishes the body with lost electrolytes/salt/water  
  • It reduces diarrhoea/stooling
