Observation

This question was attempted by many candidates and their performance was poor. However, in part (a) (i) majority ofthe candidates lost marks due to their inability to draw a javelin and label correctly and in part (a)(ii) few candidates mentioned types of carriage in javelin throw in athletics while many candidates failed to mention the types of carriage in javelin throw in athletics. In part (b) candidates successfully listed materials needed for officiating in both discus and shot put events in athletics. In part (c) candidates could not explain the styles of crouch start in sprint races bullet medium and elongated.

The expected answers were as follows:
(a)(i) Draw and label a javelin
Size (not less than 10 lines)
Accuracy (both ends and grips shown)

Labelling

- overhead
- shoulder/over shoulder

(c) Explanation of each of the following styles of crouch start in sprint races
Bullet:
- toes of the rear foot in line with the heal of front foot
- the knee of the rear leg should be beside the big toe of the front foot
- hands placed shoulder width apart behind the scratch line

Medium:
- the knee of the rear leg is in line with the arch of the front foot
- the knee of the rear leg should be beside the big toe of the front foot
- hands placed shoulder width aparUbehind the scratch line.

Elongated:
- the knee of the rear leg is in line with the heel of the front foot
- the knee of the rear leg touches the ground
- hands placed shoulder width apart/behind the scratch line
