Observation

This question was attempted by many candidates and their performance was poor. In part (a)(i) and (ii), many candidates correctly mentioned the order of service in doubles game in tennis part of the court common to both badminton game and tennis game and in (a)(iii) many candidates correctly stated instances when a player wins a point in a game of badminton. In part (b) candidates could not correctly explain the chop and the stance as terms used in table tennis game. In part (c) many candidates could not correctly state duties of an umpire in a game of table tennis.

The expected answers were as follows:

(a)(i) The order of service in doubles game in tennis
- One of the pairs of the side that won the toss serves first or receive
- one of the opposing pairs serves the second game
- the partner of the player who served first serves in the third game
- the partner of the player who served the second game serves the fourth game and so on

(ii)       Parts of the court common to both badminton game and tennis game
- base line
- single side line
- double's side line
- service line
- single court
- double's court
- alley

(iii) Instances when a player wins a point in a game of badminton
- when an opponent fails to make a good return
- strikes the shuttlecock twice in succession
- plays the shuttlecock outside the bounds of the courts
- touches the net with any part of the body/racket
- plays the shuttlecock under the net
- plays the shuttlecock into/through the net

(b) Explanation of the following terms in table tennis game
(i) The Chop
It is a stroke in which the ball is sliced/and spins backward on landing
(ii) The stance
This is the position a player assume during play/explained.

( c) Duties of an Umpire in a game of table tennis
- checks equipment and playing arealhall
- conducts the draw/toss for choice of service/receiving/ends
- counts/calls the scores
- decides when rally is a point or let
-refers appeals/cases to the referee
