Observation

This question was attempted by many candidates and their performance was fair.  In part (a) (i) candidates correctly  listed five tumbling activties in gymnastics, in (a)(ii) candidates could not correctly explain the term spotting as used in gymnastics. In part (b) candidates correctly stated errors that could be committed during the execution of backwad roll. In part (c) candidates could not correctly state safety measures in gymnastics.  In part (d) candidates could not correctly outline the procedure for performing handspring in gymnastics.
However, the expected answers were as follows:
8(a)(i)  Tumbling activities in gymnastics

  • forward roll
  • backward roll
  • headspring
  • arabspring
  • cartwheel
  • somersault
  • side roll
  • flip flap
  • flyspring
  • short-arm
  • long-arm over spring

     (ii)   Explanation of spotting in gymnastics
            Spotting is the act of giving support to a performer                                                              
(b)        Errors that could be committed during the execution of backward roll.

  • falling sideways
  • head touching ground
  • not rolling on back
  • inability to lift body with hands
  • not recovering in erect position
  • not tuck- in the head

 (c)       Safety measures in gymnastics

  • concentrate on the activity involved
  • equipment must be checked before use
  • perform the activity progressively/from simple to complex/known to unknown
  • spotting is very necessary/provide a spotter
  • avoid continuation when fatigue sets in
  • warm up before the real activity
  • wear appropriate clothing
  • avoid wearing ring/jewelry/long fingernails
  • avoid performing on slippery surface
  • performing area should be free from hazards
  • activities should be performed in turns
  • stop performing when in pain/injured

  (d)     Procedure for performing handspring in gymnastics

  • with a run up, performer takes off on one foot/single take-off
  •  place palms on ground or floor/mat
  • lands first on both hands
  • swing both legs over to land in standing position
