_____________________________________________________________________________________________________
Observation

This was one of the popular questions.  The candidates could not state the application of electrolysis in a school laboratory but could state those in industries.  This is an indication of lack of laboratory practices.

The expected answers are:

(a)    In industry we use electrolysis for;
(i)     electroplating;
(ii)    extraction of some metals (e.g. aluminum);

  1. production of some gases (e.g. hydrogen);
  2. purification of some metals (eg. copper).

(b)        In the school laboratory, we use electrolysis to:

  1. calibrate ammeter;
  2. electrolyze acidified water.
