Candidates' Strength

The poor performance of the candidates was as a result of the following identified weaknesses: Inaccurate representation of the objects set as a result of lack of sense of proportion and perspective. Poor shading techniques; shading was spread arbitrarily all over the picture without being graded from full tone to halftone and highlight to indicate the, source of .,light on the picture. poor rendering of forms with weak lines and tones resulting in faint drawing and poor tonal contrast.

Poor composition of objects to achieve cohesion and unity; objects were drawn in scattered form without grouping them together. Poor layout i.e. working space was not used to advantage (either drawn too small or too large to bleed-touch the paper edge). lack of indication of baseline or background in most of the
candidates' work thus pictures appear hanging or suspended in the space. Enclosure of pictures within demarcated line(s) to form a box. Pictures should not be enclosed within extra borderline or framework.
pictures cut short: instead of drawing full figure as required in the question e.g. question 3 (figure) some candidates drew half of the body.

In order to overcome the weaknesses highlighted above, the candidates should:
be taught by trained art teachers who know what to look for in a good drawing and have the ability to guide and correct drawing errors.
be exposed to good art works through art exhibitions and visits to art galleries and museums.
have knowledge of the principles of art and design for guidance in picture making. be engaged in more practical drawing during studio practice and class lessons. be encouraged in the use of sketchbook to practice drawing and sketching at will. Form school Art and Visual Literacy Club to extend their art learning activities beyond the normal classroom work. Read the questions carefully to know its demands in order to avoid
misinterpretation.
