Candidates were unable to:

  • state the advantages of artificial insemination;
  • state the functions of the rumen;
  • explain malnutrition;
  • distinguish between maintenance and production rations;
  • define the terms hay and silage;
  • state the advantages of establishing grass-legume pasture;
  • state the advantages of rotational grazing;
  • draw and label the digestive tract of a hen;
  • define animal improvement;
  • explain the terms cross breeding and out breeding;
  • give the gestation periods (days) of sheep, pig and rabbit;
  • name the causative organism and modes of transmission of anthrax disease;
  • draw and label the reproductive tract of a hen;
  • define culling as used in livestock production;
  • state the reasons why culling is practised in cattle production; and
  • mention the major functions of ptyalin, rennin and pepsin during digestion of feed in rabbits.

Consequent on the identified weaknesses observable in the candidates’ scripts, the Chief Examiners made the following recommendations:

  • Only competent graduates of Animal Science/Production should be saddled with the responsibility of teaching the subject in Senior Secondary Schools;
  • Animal Husbandry should be taught as a practical oriented subject through laboratory activities, field trips, excursions etc.; and
  • Adequate facilities and textbooks on Animal Husbandry should be made available to enhance the teaching-learning of Animal Husbandry in Senior Secondary Schools.
