  1. scalding;
  2. singeing;

(c) State five marketing functions that could be performed to facilitate the sale of chicken and eggs.         [5 marks]
(d) Name three stages in the life cycle of a roundworm.                                          [3 marks]
(e) Mention two methods of animal improvement.                                        [2 marks]

Observation

 

This question was not very popular among candidates. Candidates’ responses were poor in explaining the terms used in slaughtering process of farm animals. Many candidates listed the marketing agents e.g. wholesaler, retailer instead of the marketing functions that could facilitate the sale of chicken and eggs. Some candidates also mentioned artificial insemination as a method of animal improvement; thus losing marks.

The expected answers include:

(a)        Explanation of terms as used in slaughtering of farm animals

            (i)         Scalding
It is the act of immersing a carcass in hot water for a few minutes to facilitate the
removal of feathers/hair/fur

(ii)        Singeing
It is the act of removing hair from a slaughtered animal by the use of flame

            (iii)       Evisceration
The removal of internal organs from the carcass of farm animals
