Agriculture Paper 2, Nov/Dec 2015

Question 3

  1. A farmland measures 250 m long and 100 m wide.
  1. Calculate the area of the farmland in hectares.    [5 marks]
  2. If a farmer intends to cultivate yam at a spacing of 1 m by 1 m on the farmland, calculate the number of yam setts required by the farmer. [3 marks]
  1. If a yam sett costs ₦5.00, calculate theamount needed by the farmer to purchase yam setts to cultivate the whole farmland.      [2 marks]
  1. Explain the term selective exploitation as used in forest management     [2 marks]
  2. State six effects of deforestation on the environment.            [6 marks]

Observation

This question was poorly attempted by the candidates.  In 3(a) (i), most of the candidates were unable to calculate the area of farmland in hectares.  More so, majority of the candidates could neither calculate the number of yam setts required by a farmer nor calculate the amount needed by the farmer to purchase the yam setts to cultivate the entire farmland as required in 3(a) (ii-iii).  However, in 3(b-c), most of the candidates were able to explain the term selective exploitation as well as state the effects of deforestation on the environment.

The expected answers include:

3.(a) (i)   Area of farmland in hectares
Area of farmland  =   250m x 100m
=   25,000m2
1 hectare              =   10,000m2
Area of farmland in hectares     =      25,000
10,000
=    2.5 hectares

(ii)  Number of yam setts required by the farmer
Spacing of yam  =  1m x 1m   =  1m2
Number of yam setts required    =         25,000 m2
1 m2
=    25,000 yam setts

(iii)   Amount needed by the farmer to purchase yam setts

1 yam sett costs  ₦5.00
25,000 yam setts will cost 25,000  x 5
=  ₦125,000.00
