Question 2
The plan below represents the survey of a farm. Use it to answer questions 2 (a) and 2 (b).
(a) Calculate the area of the farmland. (4 marks)
(b) If the farmland is planted with banana at a spacing of 4 m x 4 m, what will be the population of banana plants on the farm? (4 marks)
(c) Study the diagrams labelled I and II below and answer the questions that follow.
(i) Name the tools labelled I and II. (2 marks)
(ii) State two uses of each of the tools labelled I and II. (4 marks)
(iii) State one general way of maintaining the tools labelled I and II. (1 mark)
Observation
(a) Candidates performed poorly in calculations on the area of farmland as well as the population
of banana trees.
(b) Some candidates could not identify the ranging pole and arrow/pin. They were mentioning
pencil and sickle respectively. As a result, they were unable to state the uses of the survey
tools.
The expected answers include:
(c) (i) Name of the tools
I - Ranging pole
II - Arrow/pin
(ii) Uses of the labelled tools
I (Ranging pole)
- Used for marking stations;
- For making straight lines.
II (Arrow/pin)
- Used during chaining for marking off length chains as measured;
- Used for marking stations;
- Used for marking points of intersection.
(iii) General ways of maintaining the tools labelled I (Ranging pole) and II
(Arrow/pin)
- Clean after use/wash and dry;
- Store in cool, dry place;
- Should be handled by competent person(s);
- Oil or grease metal part;
- Sharpen the pointed metal tip;
