SECTION A
(a) The sketch in Figure 1 shows an automobile chassis layout.
(i) Name the components labelled P, Q, R, S and T.
(ii) State two functions each of the components labelled R and T.
(b) What is the purpose of an inter-locking device in automobile gearbox?
Observation
Candidates’ responses to questions on the chassis layout were not adequate. They found it difficult to name the labelled components and state the functions of indicated parts. The solutions to the poorly answered part of the question are given below
(a)
(i)
P–EngineorPower Unit
Q–Clutch
R–Gearbox
S–Propellershaft
T–Final Drive or RearAxle
Functions of the Labelled Parts
R (Gearbox)
- Itenablesthevehicletoreverse.
- It increasesthetorque.
- Itvariesthespeed oftheengineaccording to roadconditionsetc.
- It ensuresapermanentneutralpositionofthe drive.
T (Rear Axle)
- It gives permanent gear reduction.
- It transmits the drive through right angle.
- It increases the torque.
- It allows one wheel to rotate faster when cornering.
