Observation

Most candidates were able to sketch hawk and tingle plate; However, some of them were unable to:

•  explain building line and set-back in relation to setting out;
•  state one use of engineering brick in wall construction.

The expected response to question 2 is as given below

 (b)      Explanation of terms in relation to setting-out

• Building line:

• This is a line which may coincide with the frontage of the proposed building. It may be established or fixed either by measuring a specified distance from the centre or edge of the existing road or by using the frontage of the existing buildings along the road as reference; 

• This is a line established by the Local Authority to which new buildings must conform in line with the existing buildings;

• This is a line which sets the building frontage back from the roadway.

• Set-back:

-This is a minimum distance measured from the road to fix the building line. It is    
usually established by Local Authority and varies from one area to another. For    
instance, set back along an expressway/2 carriage way, a major road and a street
may be 12m, 6m and 3m respectively.
 (c)       Uses of Engineering Bricks:
-           To check the movement of dampness or rise of moisture into the building;
-           For heavy construction such as bridges, piers, retaining walls, abutments or other structures which required great strength;
-           For construction of load bearing walls.
