Most candidates were able to:
- explain the given concrete production terminologies correctly;
- describe methods of exterminating termites on a building site.
However, majority of them failed to:
- distinguish between mass concrete and reinforced concrete;
- use good sketches to illustrate a method of preventing termites from
entering a building using termite shield;
The expected response to question 2 is as given below:
(a)(i) (i) Batching is the process of measuring the concrete materials in the
given proportions.
(ii) Compaction is the process of eliminating void from a concrete
mix.
(iii) Curing is a process of preventing mixed water from drying out
quickly or the process of keeping the mixed water in the concrete for hydration of the cement.
(b) Mass concrete contains no reinforcement while reinforced concrete
contains steel reinforcement to resist tensile and sharing stresses.
(c)(i) (i) Application of strong common salt solution.
(ii) Digging deep to the ground to get the Queen of the termites. Once
the Queen is removed or killed, the colony is wipe out.
- Spraying of chemicals over the site after levelling e.g. Deldrin Dust, Aldrin Dust and Aldrex 20 EC.
(ii) Method of preventing termites from entering a building using termite
shield.
