Observation
Majority of candidates were able to:
- state two functions of a road kerb;
- state three factors that influences the choice of materials for pavement works.
However, few of the candidates were not able to:
- sketch in elevation a wooden close-boarded fence;
- label the parts of a wooden close-boarded fence correctly.
The expected response to question 5 is as given below:
.(a) Two functions of a road Kerb:
(i) kerb resists the lateral thrust of the traffic on it;
(ii) kerb is also used to guide traffic;
(iii) kerb is used on dual carriageway to protect the pedestrians from vehicle;
(iv) kerb defines carriageway limits;
(iv) kerb directs the flow of surface water to gullies.
b) Three factors that influence the choice of materials for pavement works:
- material cost;
- maintenance cost;
- appearance;
- wear-resistance properties;
- strength/durability;
- weather resistance;
- non-slip properties.
