A. Relate the circumstances that led to the death of Eli the priest.

B. Identify four effects of children’s disobedience on the family.

Observation


This question was very popular among the candidates. In the part A, candidates were able to talk about how Hopni and Phinehas were treating the sacrifices offered to God with contempt and doing things that were disgusting before God. They were also able to talk about the war between Israel and the Philistines and how the Israelites were defeated. The exceptional candidates wrote about the born of Ichabod. Candidates strength was recorded in the B part where they pointed the effects of children’s disobedience to the family and the society at large. Others points candidates were expected to list including;
i. Eli was a priest at Shiloh with two sons, Hophni and Phinehas
ii. The two sons were worthless people who treated the Lord’s peace offerings with contempt.
iii. They forcefully took any part of the meat and even raw meat instead of boiled one, which was against custom.
iv. They laid with women in the tent of meeting.
v. Their deeds came to Eli but he could not restrain them.
vi. A man of God and Samuel warned Eli but to no avail.
vii. The activities of Eli’s sons provoked God’s anger who planned to destroy his household.
viii. God then gave Israel into the hands of the Philistines in a war at Ebenezer.
ix. Israel suffered defeat as 3000 men were lost and the rest fled.
x. The Ark of the Lord was captured.
xi. Eli’s sons, Hophni and Phinehas were slain.
xii. That same day a Benjamite, clad in worn out clothes and clay came to break the news in the city and the people cried out.
xiii. When Eli heard the crying, he quizzed and asked what the uproar was about.
xiv. The Benjamite went over to Eli to break the news to him and that the Ark of God was captured.
xv. When Eli heard of the Ark’s capture, he fell over and died breaking his neck.
xvi. He was 98years old when he died after judging Israel for 40 years.
Effects of children’s disobedience on the family
i. Disgrace.
ii. Conflict: Parent/child conflict.
iii. Lack of cooperation among members of the family.
iv. Sickness/stress
v. Death
vi. Divorce
vii. Separation
viii. Lost of their dignity/ family becomes a source of ridicule.
ix. Loss of job position/ Lack of Job opportunities.
x. Indebtedness
