Candidates’ weaknesses can be summarized as follows:
(1) Non-adherence to instructions especially with regards to step wise test;
(2) lack of understanding of the demands of the questions;
(3) lack of understanding of some important principles of chemistry e.g. stoichiometry;
(4) arithmetic error and use of wrong units e.g. wrong unit was used for molar mass;
(5) inability to draw logical conclusion from observation already made for them;
(6) inability to differentiate between gelatinous and chalky precipitate;
(7) not familiar with laboratory apparatus and their uses.
The following were however suggested as remedies:
(1) candidates should be exposed to more practical work;
(2) candidates should familiarize themselves with the examination syllabus;
(3) qualified teachers should be employed to impart requisite knowledge;
(4) teachers of chemistry should attend seminars/workshops;
(5) candidates should prepare adequately for examination.
