Question 2
Candidates were required to
State advantages of the following fibres:
(a)(i) Linen
(ii) Wool
(iii) Nylon
(2b) identify one use each of the fibres stated in 2(a) above.
(2) Explain the following finishes given to cotton fibrics:
(i) mercerization
(ii) sanforization
(iii) proban
Few candidates were able to answer questions 2(a) and 2(b) correctly. However, in question 2(c) the candidates performed poorly. The correct explanations of the finishing given to cotton fabrics include: mercerization: a process of passing yarns or fabric through strong caustic soda alkali solution to make them stronger, smoother and lustrous; Sanforisation: treatment of cotton fabric to prevent shrinkage and Proban: a treatment given to fabric to make it flame proof/prevent it from catching fire.
