Question 6
Candidates were required to
(a) Explain the following terms used in textile production
(i) blended yarn
(ii) ply yarn
(iii) stretch yarn
(b) Give one example each of the following groups of fibres:
(i) vegetable fibre
(ii) protein fibre
(iii) regenerated fibre
(iv) synthetic fibre.
(c) State two characteristics of the following:
(i) animal fibres
(ii) man- made fibres
(d) Give one example of woollen fabrics.
Most of the candidates attempted this questions and they performed very well in (a) and (b) but for (c) and (d) it was a woeful performance. Most of the candidates were defining animal and man-made fibres rather than listing the characteristics and they could not also give examples of woolen fabrics. The expected answers for the characteristics of animal and man-made fibres include: animal fibres absorbent; drape well and are warm to wear while Man-made fibres are very strong/durable; less absorbent and crease resistant. The correct examples of woolen fabrics include flannel, crepes, felt and blazer cloth.
