Candidates' Weakness
Candidates’ weaknesses were observed as follow:
- Expression in simple and clear language;
- Uunable to explain consumer education to a First Year Senior School Home Economics student;
- Explain factors that determine the amount of fabric needed to make a shirt for a teenager;
- Explain how to take any measurements stated;
- Differentiate between synthetic fibres and regenerated fibres;
- State the characteristics of man-made fibres and natural fibres;
- Mention finishing treatments given to cotton fabrics;
- State the finishing treatments mentioned;
- State the main classes of seam;
- Describe with the aid of well labelled diagrams how to make a French seam;
- Mention faults which may occur when working a French seam;
- Enumerate ways of neatening a plain seam;
- Explain these clothing and textiles terms: wardrobe, patching, arrangement of fullness, edge finishes;
- Give examples of any of the terms explained;
- Show how to attach a facing to the scooped neckline of a front bodice with the aid of diagrams.
To overcome these weaknesses,
- Teachers should devote more time on practical aspect of the subject.
- Candidates should devote more time to their studies;
- Candidates should buy and read relevant textbooks;
- Candidates should be made to produce sample articles on each topic taught.
- Candidates should be made to always practice sketching of some related diagrams.
