Observation
Some candidates who attempted the question did well. However, others could not explain non-verbal and traditional communication. Most candidates could not outline the advantages and disadvantages of tourism to host nation.
The expected responses to the question include:
(a) Explanation of types of communication
(i) Non-verbal communication refers to the communication methods that make use of messages and \symbols through eye contact, facial expressions, gestures, body language and other forms of actions.
(ii) Traditional communication refers to methods of conveying messages
and beliefs to people within a community through talking drums, town criers, gongs, gun blasts, whistles, bells, trumpets, flutes and so on.
(b) (i) Tourism is the practice whereby people travel or visit places of interests
or attractions where they can relax, recreates, derive pleasure and entertainment within a limited period of time.
(ii) Advantages of Tourism to a Host Nation
- It creates employment opportunities as people engage in creating products that would be bought by tourists.
- The increased spending by tourists would provide necessary income for the host community. Development of the tourism sector creates an avenue for diversification of a country’s economy, thereby reducing dependency on one sector.
- Tourism brings about infrastructural development especially in places that are of great interest to tourists.
- It is a source of pride to communities and therefore leads to the need to preserve and develop cultural heritage/artefacts.
- Tourism leads to the need for environmental conservation in order to preserve places of interest.
- It generates revenue to the host nation.
Disadvantages of Tourism To a Host Nation
- It puts pressure on infrastructure and the host communities have to provide accommodation, electricity, water and transportation.
- There is loss of privacy as visitors flood into places of interest.
- Sellers may target the higher purchasing power of tourists thereby inflating prices.
- Local jobs may be affected as a result of the seasonal nature of tourism.
- Change in value and respect for spiritual places would occur due to the commercial nature of activities during visits.
- Increase in social vices as a result of the influx of tourists.
- Inadequate security measures at tourist centres may tarnish the image of the host nation.
