Observation
Good number of candidates who attempted this question did not perform well in part (a) of the question. They could not relate to question to division of labour. However, they were able to explain ways a company could be socially responsible.
The expected responses to the question include:
(a) Advantages of the work process to the car repairer
- It would lead to increase in output/ large scale production.
- It would save the time needed to repair the vehicles.
- It would enhance greater skill of his workers.
- It would keep his production cost low.
- It would reduce fatigue of his workers thereby enabling them to work harder.
- It leads to economic use of tools since the work process is handled by specialists.
Disadvantages of the work process to the car repairer
- There would be decline in craftmanship of his workers thereby making them unable to perform other tasks.
- Monotony in the work process could cause workers to be less interested in their jobs.
- Workers would be too dependent on one another to be able to complete tasks.
- The breakdown of a tool or machine could disrupt the entire production process.
(b) Ways a company could be socially responsible to its host community
- The company could provide employment to members of the community thereby enabling them to earn a living.
- The company could control the level of pollution from its activities, thus minimizing climate change.
- The company could provide scholarships and apprenticeship schemes for the indigenes thus enabling them to be highly educated and skilled.
- The company could provide social amenities like electricity, roads, pipe borne water, schools and health facilities to the community to improve their living conditions.
- The company could support sports programmes to benefit the active population of the community in terms of recreation.
- The company could sell its products and services at reduced prices to members of the host community.
