CANDIDATES’ WEAKNESSES AND SUGGESTED REMEDIES

 

The candidates were unable to:

 

- state with reason which of specimens A (Fish pond water) and B (Tap water) is more suitable for the culture of table fish;

- describe the ways of improving the quality of specimen B (Tap water) for table fish production;

- give the differences and similarities in the use of specimens E (Hook and line) and F (Cast net);

- list the components of specimens E (Hook and line) and F (Cast net);

- list the differences between specimens G (Fresh catfish) and H (Smoked catfish); - outline the steps involved in converting specimen G (Fresh catfish) to specimen H (Smoked catfish);

- describe the methods of applying specimen M (Poultry manure) to fish ponds;

- state the effects of applying excess quantity of specimen M (Poultry manure) to fish ponds.

 

Consequent on the weaknesses observed from the candidates’ scripts, the Chief Examiners recommended as follows:

(i) Only competent graduates of Fisheries should be saddled with the responsibility of teaching the subject in Senior Secondary Schools;

(ii) Fisheries should be taught as a practical oriented subject through laboratory activities, field trips, excursions etc; and

(iii) Adequate facilities and textbooks on Fisheries should be made available to enhance the teaching – learning of Fisheries in Senior Secondary Schools
