The weaknesses on the candidates’ scripts are highlighted below:
Inability to locate features on sketch maps accurately
Some of the candidates could not mark and locate features correctly on maps. Mastery of this skill can only be secured through practise.
Scanty explanation of points
Some of the candidates merely listed points that ought to be explained. Sketchy presentation of points without adequate explanations can only lead to securing about half of the marks for most questions.
Partial coverage of the syllabus
From the responses to some of the questions by some of the candidates, it could be inferred that they did not fully cover the syllabus before the commencement of the examination.
4. SUGGESTED REMEDIES FOR OVERCOMING CANDIDATES’ WEAKNESSES
To overcome the weaknesses noticed in the scripts of the candidates, the following measures should be taken:
Practising how to accurately locate features on maps
Candidates are expected to practise how to locate features such as areas, towns, thematic occurrences on maps perfectly. Practice makes perfect.
Full explanation of points
Points should be explained to secure full marks for questions like highlight, describe, explain, state, outline, etc
Full coverage of syllabus before the examination
Candidates are expected to read and fully cover the syllabus before the examinations begin. This will enable them to have a wide range of topics from which they could make their choices.
