This was one of the most popular questions and it was massively attempted with good performance record. However, some candidates could not explain the listed points in a more comprehensive way and this could have hindered their performance. Indeed, this question generally afforded the candidates the opportunity to boost their performances. The following points were expected of the candidatesto score good marks:
- Military intervention in Politics: - West Africa is still bedeviled by military coups.
This is seen as a major problem to the community’s quest for good and democratic governance.
(ii) Language barrier - Member states are polarized into English, French and Portuguese languages. This i seen as a barrier to the unity of the peoples of the sub-region.
(iii) Fear of domination – Some of the smaller nations have great fears that big nations in the community might dominate them. Hence, there is mutual suspicion among them.
(iv)Difference in currency – Different currencies create barriers in the exchange of good and services in the sub-region.
(v)Influence of foreign powers and ex-colonial masters. Member states depend on them economically, etc.
