In what five ways did the French policy of Assimilation retard the overall development of her West African Colonies.
Observation
This question was within the syllabus and was also avoided by some of the candidates. The few ones who attempted it did not perform well; they failed to provide correct answers to the question. The candidates were expected to provide the following answers in order to score good marks.
- It reduced diversity of the people
- It promoted inequalities/segregation (socio-political and economic)
- It forced the people to change their identity I.e., neglected their African background/culture
- Dehumanized the African
- Denial of Fundamental Human Rights
- Appointed and dismissed traditional rulers and chiefs at will
- Education was restricted to only a few
- The African was greatly cowed into submission I.e., forced labour/harsh punishment/indegenat policy
- The economy of the people was dominated by the French to the exclusion of the African
- No opposition was tolerated
- Formation of political parties and associations were prohibited
- No establishment of legislative institutions to make laws for the respective territoriesDivisions of Africans into citizens and subjects stifled nationalism
- Denied majority of Africans the right to participate in governance
