(b) Identify any four reasons for the success of Christian missionary activities in Nigeria.
Observation
This was a fairly popular question; many candidates missed the part (a) while some just listed any early schools established without recourse on whether they were primary or secondary schools. Others did not mind whether they were government or missionary schools. Candidates were expected to mention the following points in order to get good marks.

(xi) Hope Waddell Training Institute, Calabar.
(b) (i) Establishment of missionary schools.
(ii) Employment of Nigerians as interpreters, teachers, chaplains, catechists and guides.
(iii) Encouragement of legitimate trade.
(iv) They hastened the abolition of the trans-Atlantic slave trade by preaching against it and collaborating with the colonial authorities in the country.
(v) They built hospitals and medical centres.
(vi) They established experimental farms and introduced new crops.
(vii) They translated the Bible into local languages.
(viii) They introduced the printing press.
(ix) Acceptance of Christianity by some people.
