State any five reasons for the Amalgamation of Nigeria in 1914.
Observation
This was a popular question and was widely attempted by the candidates. The points involved were understood by the candidates but some of them were discussing the role of Frederick Luggard which resulted in poor marks. Generally, candidates were expected to mention the following points in order to get good marks:
(i) The amalgamation of 1914 was done to harmonize the economy of the two protectorates.
(ii) It was also done to ensure a smooth colonial administration of the area.
(iii) It was geared towards harnessing the natural resources in the hinterland.
(iv) It was done to reduce the cost of administration by the British government.
(v) It was done to solve the problem of inadequate number of British personnel in the area.
(vi) It was to harmonize the administration of the Northern and Southern parts.
(vii) It was to ensure a firm grip on the administration of Nigeria.
(viii) It was to establish an outlet for the evacuation of goods and services from the hinterland to the coast without any political obstacle.
