Factors that affect the choice of cooking method was poorly answered with comments like the type of nutrient, and the method of heating e.g. radiation etc instead of health condition.
In 6(b), many were able to distinguish between Lacto and Strict vegetarian, but they did not link the answers with ‘while’ thus made them to loose some marks.
Reason for being a vegetarian was well attempted.
The required answers to the questions are as follows:
(a) Factors that affect the choice of a cooking method
- Food to be cooked
- Time available
- Type of fuel available
- Amount of cooking to be done
- Individual taste
- Individual health condition
- Skill of the cook
- Equipment available
- Age of the person to eat the food.
(a) Difference between Lacto and strict vegetarians
Strict vegetarians – do not eat animal flesh and its products. They get their protein from plant, while
(b) Lacto vegetarians – do not eat animal flesh but they eat the products like milk, cheese etc.
Notes: If the two sentences are not connected by ‘while’ or “but”, the candidate loose ½ mark.
(c) Reasons for being a vegetarian
- High cost of meat, fish and other animal products may cause people to cut them off their diet completely.
- Problems of ill health that might prevent some people from eating animal flesh or its products.
- Aesthetic belief, that is, dislike of the idea of animals being killed for food/Personal decision.
- Cult practices which prevent people of the group from eating flesh and its products.
- Religious or customary taboos may prevent people or tribes from eating animal flesh as food.
