Translate the following verses into English and comment on them.
Alam yajidka yatīman fa āwā.
Wa wajadaka Ḑalan fahada.
Wa wajadaka ā‘ilan fa aghnā.
Fa ammal-Yatima fa lā taqhar(Q.93:6-9).
Observation
This was a fairly popular question among the candidates. Most of the candidates who attempted this question got it rightly including the commentary. The performance generally was very good.
The question required the candidates to translate the verses into English and comment on them thus:
- Translation:
- Did He not find you an orphan and protected you?
- Did He not find you wandering and directed you?
- Did He not find you destitute and enriched you?
- Therefore the orphan oppress not.
- Commentary:
- The verses are the 6th – 9th of Sūratuḍ-Ḑuḥā (Q.93).
- These verses highlight the favours Allah granted the Prophet (S.A.W.) in his formative years.
- At age six, the Prophet (S.A.W.) became a complete orphan.
- However, Allah protected him in the household of Abdul- Muṭṭalib and Abū Ṭālib.
- He was born during the dark period in the Arab history (Jāhilīyyah).
- However, he never participated in the vices of the era (idolatry, promiscuity etc.).
- He exhibited admirable excellent character traits acknowledged by his kinsmen hence, he was given the title al-Amīn.
- Allah brought him up and prepared him for the Divine message.
- Allah revealed Himself to him when he was forty (40).
- Muhammad (S.A.W.) was poor but Allah empowered him to be content with his situation.
- To further make him comfortable, Allah inspired others to be kind towards him.
- Khadījah showed him much kindness especially after their marriage.
- Allah exhorts Muhammad (S.A.W.) and human kind generally to be generous to orphans.
